The 2023 World Women’s Snooker Championship has reached the quarter-final stage, with several upsets in the last 16 matches at the Hi-End Snooker Club in Thailand. Notably, three-time world champion Ng On Yee was among those upset at this stage of the tournament. The competition promises to be intense as the remaining players battle it out for the prestigious title.
Defending champion Mink Nutcharut and number four-ranked Rebecca Kenna have progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women’s World Snooker Championship. In the top half of the draw, the two players will face off in a highly-anticipated match, which will feature two of the world’s top four players. Nutcharut, who recently became world number one for the first time in her career, secured her place in the quarter-finals after defeating India’s Natasha Chethan and England’s Mary Talbot-Deegan. Kenna, on the other hand, had a rollercoaster day, recovering from a 0-2 deficit against Australian talent Lilly Meldrum to win her final group stage match and avoid an early exit.
The winner of Nutcharut vs. Kenna will face either Siripaporn Nuanthakhamjam or Bayarsaikhan Narantuya in the quarter-finals. Nuanthakhamjan came through a dramatic match against fifth-seeded Jamie Hunter, while Narantuya overcame a tough challenge from Thailand’s Waratthanun Sukritthanes.
In the bottom section of the draw, China’s Bai Yulu will face England’s Maria Catalano in an intriguing tie. Bai Yulu, who impressed throughout the tournament with 14 breaks over 30, avenged her defeat to India’s Anupama Ramachandran in the semi-finals of the Under-21 tournament with a dominant 4-0 victory. Catalano, a five-time world championship finalist, defeated Sukritthanes and Hong Kong’s Ho Yee Ki to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2018.
The tournament will continue on Friday with the start of the Challenge Cup for players who did not reach the last 16, and the finals of the Under-21 and Seniors tournaments are also due to be played during the penultimate day of the event. Fans are eagerly waiting to see who will be crowned the new Women’s World Snooker Champion in what has already been a thrilling tournament filled with dramatic matches and surprises.
